Ahhhhhhh. That feeling of wonder when you walk into the local garden supply store to look for your precious seeds for the years garden. Utter relief and overwhelming feelings of joy upon seeing the walls of seeds waiting for you to choose them. That was me today.
If you can imagine this.....I walk into the store and sanitize my hands of course, looking around to see where the treasure aisle is.....A slight panic starts to set in when all I see is planters, yard decor....NOOOOOOO.....they can't be sold out yet!!!......then, quietly behind me.....my husband says "over there babe" and points just to left of me a few steps away.....YES!!!....there is a whole WALL of them!!!
Thanks babe! I will be over here!!!! and off he went to wander lol.
Now, I made a list on-line from this store. Even selected the sizes needed for what I am planning. Guess where the list was? Hmmmm.....I will give you 3 guesses and the first 2 don't count. LOL YUP.....at home, in my folder, beside my couch....UGH!
Now what? How do I remember a $200 list when I can't remember if I unplugged the toaster? Ok, new plan of action. I will do this one row at a time, easy peasy, especially since the wall of seeds is in alphabetical order by type.
Whew. Ok. I am on it! Where is the hubby? Still wandering somewhere, good I have time! And I start with beets. Oh beets, there are so many, sooooo many varieties. Well, for sure need Cylinder Beets....delish and divine, now any others? I was sure there was more than one on my list but I cannot remember....seriously??....fine then, moving on. Next is.....carrots. Have you ever looked at the varieties of carrots? Seriously it's pretty cool. I knew I wanted Rainbow Carrots as per the 4 (oops I mean 5) year old gbabe, and some of the Atomic Red (grow pint roots and turn red when cooked). But what other variety for the basic carrots? They were out of the Nante I planted last year and I didn't really research the others yet. Deciding was most of the challenge, which is why I made the list, which I of course failed to bring.

Cue the hubby...almost like he sensed I wasn't being efficient. "Done yet?" Ummmmm, I only had like 5 seed packs in my basket, hahahaha. So not done.
So with his help, I sent him looking for the ones I did remember, we got it cased. Well, as best you can without the silly list....I don't think I have ever remembered a list when I really needed it. Oh well, such is life.
He did scope the store and therefore knew where to find the light bulbs for my grow lights that are burnt out. Yes, timesaver! So I think you can guess what happened next.....DING DING DING.....give a pat on your back for getting it right. There was no, list.....sigh. Ok. So what size do we think we need? He has one idea I have another. Chalk that up to another day purchase.
At the end of that row I see another, wait for it, WALL OF SEEDS!!!! Now this one was special you see, it is full of all sorts of pretty flower seeds. Oh, only if my sweet bean was there to choose her flowers....we would be broke for sure lol.

This year my darling girl is going to become the youngest market vendor at the Rosthern Farmers Market. That's right!! She will be selling her beautiful Cut Flowers in her own wee stand that will be built for her. She already asked for investors from parents and grandparents, lol. So score one for her to get her stand built the way she wants it ahhaah. She knows what she wants that one.
Flowers are amazing in the garden for many reasons. They attract pollinators, as well as things such as wasps that help to control some of the pests. As well, they serve as beauty for us to enjoy and to cut and sell for a young upstart who wants to earn enough money to get a Barbie Dreamhouse of her own. When we first asked her what she was going to buy with the money, she said simply "More seeds for flowers", now....I mean...yup....my heart. Here she is above, holding what she picked for supper from our garden in 2020. This girl loves the dirt almost as much as I do.
Okay, back to the shop event.
So, we have all the seeds we can think of. We have plastic seed markers, some seeding tools for the ridiculously small seeds that you want one and get a thousand. What else?
SOIL! Duh, that would be smooth to get all the seeds and have nothing to plant them into. Living over hour away is great for privacy and such, not so much when you leave your list at home though. Ok, which one to choose. Hubby is trying to help, but so is confusing. So, I decide and that is the one. Are we sure because he REALLY does not want to carry that all around the store. Nope, we are done. I will order the potato and onion seeds at the till. I hear a slight groan/sigh from behind me, I smiled as I know exactly what he was thinking. His thoughts were....REALLY???? Hahahaha and that is what 27 years of marriage get you, kinda know each other. Well, he is my best friend so.....
Now to the till. The funny part is because it is seeds you are buying you can't tell how much a person has until they are at the counter. So the young one calls us over. She is quite friendly and chatty, scans the soil and then I pass her the basket. Oh, that is alot more seed packets than I thought.....oh dear. Now, I am fully expecting the amount to be above $200 since I did it online and I didn't include the soil or seeds for flowers.
As the poor girl sorts my many, many packs of seeds into prices to make it easier for her we stand there and watch. Covid rules you know. Ok she has it cased!! All rung in, I ask about ordering potato seeds and she asks another girl to do this as she(our cashier) is under training and not sure how to do that. Now, I really feel bad that I put this girl with all the seeds we chose. LOL. I imagine they have many large orders coming through right now and mine was likely one of them for the day.
We get the potato seeds and onion sets ordered for the year. Yup, last year we could barely find any. Well, not this year I tell ya! I decided to get 10lbs of Kennebec and 10lbs of Red Norland seeds. That should give us more than enough, hopefully. And onion sets we ordered 4 sets of Red and 4 of Spanish. Spanish onions are my fave but I love the look of the red onion as well. So I will have some onions for ourselves for storage as well as the market. We may still get more sets, but for the time being these will suffice.
Home to go through my seed loot and check it against my list. I did not bad for getting what I originally wanted! Surprised me too, lol. I missed a few but they were different varieties of the basics that I did get. Next time we head in I will get them, or maybe I can convince my daughter to do momma a favor? Regardless, more seeds will be had. With this much space, we are planning on going big this year. To grow a garden, it is healing for your mind & soul.
We have grand goals and dreams for this coming season. I hope that I live up to half of what I aspire to become.
This is what a CSA Subscription does for us. I had used just under $300 which is equivalent of one Regular CSA Season. With the blessing of being chosen to be the CSA you select to go with, we are putting your investment to great use. As we look to grow to the next step and project(s), we are encouraged by your support and inquiries.
Thank you for joining us for the read, and thank you for supporting a small local business dream.
